Nalanda was one of the first ever residential universities from 5th Century A.D. to 12th Century A.D. for higher learning in Bihar, India. The total area covered in Nalanda is 14 hectares and it had the capability to accommodate around 10000 students and around 3000 teachers. There are several temples and meditation points and library too in Nalanda. Nalanda was built by Gupta rulers who were followers of Buddha. The Gupta dynasty flourished till the end of 12th century when a Persian ruler invaded the kingdom. He burnt the library and even burnt thousands of monks alive and beheaded the left ones as he was adamant to uproot the Buddhism. Though the library was again rebuilt shortly after this, it was again destroyed later.
Now most of the structures of Nalanda are left as ruins but it is still a symbol of glorious history and learning of Indian culture. Almost all subjects were taught in Nalanda, providing the students a religious upbringing. There was a nice bonding between the teachers and the students of Nalanda, and also the atmosphere was pleasant and calm. Nalanda is one of the Seven Wonders of India.
